North East Lincolnshire Council Bans Parking on Verges and Pavements

To enhance safety and accessibility, North East Lincolnshire Council has opted to prohibit parking on verges and pavements throughout the borough. This unanimous decision is aimed at resolving the ongoing problems residents face, especially those with mobility challenges. Liberal Democrat councillor Stephen Beasant, who experiences these difficulties first hand as his wife uses a wheelchair, highlighted the weekly issues caused by vehicles obstructing pathways. Even though Conservative councillors backed the initiative, they gave a cautious reminder that full enforcement could take as long as five years, and would necessitate a boost in the number of enforcement officers.

The council’s plan considers exceptions for narrow streets, ensuring emergency vehicles have access and introduces an enhanced online system for residents to report parking problems. Despite opposition to the proposition of a select committee, the council remains dedicated to implementing these changes for the benefit of all residents by improving day-to-day safety and accessibility.
