The South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) is on the verge of taking control of a new council depot in Grantham worth £8.8 million. The Lindum Group, the appointed contractor, expects to hand over the authority to SKDC on 30th October. The depot is located on Turnpike Close and is scheduled for an official opening on 1st December. More than 250 staff members, who will manage services like waste management, park maintenance, and street cleaning, are expected to occupy the depot.
Councillor Richard Cleaver has emphasised the importance of the depot’s sustainable design. While the new depot is being established, the old depot on Alexandra Road, which dates back to the 1970s, will remain functional. SKDC is investigating potential future usage for the old location. The new depot’s construction status is in the advanced stages, with the chief building’s steel framework and outer brickwork almost complete, and work on the roof and cladding to follow shortly.
Currently, the Lindum Group is developing the lorry parking area with plans to commence work on the principal car park soon. The estimated cost for moving services and staff from the previous depot is an additional £500,000, which is expected to result in improved working conditions for employees.
