Gainsborough Fitness Class Helps Cancer Survivor Reconnect with Community

Title: Gainsborough Fitness Class Assists Cancer Survivor Engage with Community

A local fitness course at the West Lindsey Leisure Centre in Gainsborough has proven to be a life-changing journey for cancer survivor Frank Carter, says his spouse Bea. The Fighting Fit classes, organised on a weekly basis, aim to offer support to those affected by cancer within the community. Both Frank and Bea, who are 75 years old, have been regular attendees ever since Frank was diagnosed with prostate and bowel cancer. Bea commented on how beneficial the class has been for Frank, providing him with an environment to share his experiences and establish connections with others. This has greatly contributed in helping him break his shell of introversion. The pair also take part in a monthly support group at The Venue at Roses. Bea considers it a ‘lifesaver’ due to the sense of friendship and assistance it provides. Frank, who is living with prostate cancer but is stable, expressed his thankfulness, recognising his luck to be a cancer survivor. Fellow participant, Philip, 82 years old, emphasises the significance of social interaction through his words, ‘Anyone could sit at home with a cup of tea. These classes remind us that we are alive and full of vitality.’ Research by Yorkshire Cancer Research indicates that regular physical activity can potentially reduce the likelihood of cancer returning. Alice Carter from the Lincoln City Foundation shed light on the sessions’ role in fostering mutual support among the attendees. The class’ instructor, Chris Duncan, pointed out that while the exercises are centred around functional movement, the tea and chat session post-class plays an equally important part in raising confidence and morale.
