The historic Spilsby Sessions House in Lincolnshire is about to go through a significant transformation after being granted an additional £1m from Historic England. This Grade II listed building, first constructed in 1827 as a sessions house and jail, was later converted into a theatre in 1984. Despite being on the Theatres Trust at-risk register since 2015, this establishment, thanks to the new funding and an additional £5m from the government’s Levelling Up Fund, is set to reopen as a vibrant community hub focused on art and culture.
East Lindsey District Councillor, Graham Marsh, highlighted the theatre’s crucial role within the community, stating that this investment will breathe new life into the building. Revised plans sent to East Lindsey District Council in April proposed a new café, a meeting room, offices, a heritage display and an outdoor seating area. The grant will specifically target conservation efforts focused on the roof and brickwork, along with window repairs and replacements.
Bruce Knight, a charity trustee for the theatre, stated that preliminary planning to reopen the venue is in progress, with constant attempts being made to secure additional funding for preparatory work. Spilsby Sessions House has also applied for an Arts Council grant to complete the essential internal fit-outs.
The transformation of the theatre is part of the council’s plan within their £8m Lincolnshire Wolds Culture & Heritage Wolds programme. This scheme also includes the restoration of Alford Manor House and Alford Windmill. As part of this initiative, Alford Windmill is set to have a new visitor centre, and the Alford Manor House will be furnished with a new function room.
