Residents of South Kesteven are being asked to inform the local council of any unoccupied houses within the area. The goal of the council is to identify and rejuvenate the vacant homes within the district. The South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) hopes to collect more accurate data on privately owned homes that are currently deserted, in a bid to bring these homes back into use.
Councillor Virginia Moran emphasised the necessity to put to use homes that are currently standing vacant. She pointed out that homes are meant to be occupied. The council has noted that there may be numerous reasons for homes remaining empty, such as changes in location, property exchanges, or the probate process. Some homes have remained deserted for a period as long as six months. When properties remain vacant for longer durations, they run the risk of degradation, becoming a breeding ground for pests or being subject to anti-social behaviour, the council added.
Peter Harrison, a council officer heading the campaign, stated that owning a vacant property could put undue stress on property owners. Mr. Harrison ensured that SKDC has the expertise required to interact and collaborate effectively with homeowners. They aim to assist homeowners in finding the best solutions for their specific circumstances. While the council has the authority to enforce action, it rather works in cooperation with the homeowners to find a solution.
