Lincolnshire Resident Urges Continuation of Life-Changing Weight Loss Scheme

Glen Allison, a Lincoln resident, is appealing to Lincolnshire County Council to continue the life-changing One You Lincolnshire programme that aided his significant weight loss journey. Thanks to this scheme, he managed to lose over nine stone (around 60kg). He attributes his success to the thoughtful assistance, gym membership, and crucial support for those seeking to stop smoking and drinking provided by this government-funded and council-managed programme.

Despite its critical role in supporting 25,000 people just last year, the future of One You Lincolnshire remains unclear. The council has approved a public consultation to decide the future of the service. Even though a provision has been made to extend the service until September 2026, the council is actively seeking public opinion on its course beyond that date.

Glen serves as a strong testament to the programme’s efficiency. He transformed his lifestyle, thanks to a 12-week course at Slimming World funded by the council. He underscores the wider benefits of the scheme by highlighting how healthier individuals lessen the strain on the NHS.

Steve Clegg, the council’s executive member for adult care and health, confirmed the council’s commitment to the judicious use of taxpayers’ money. He clarified that the consultation is an effort to optimise the use of funds specifically set aside for public health purposes- not a cost-clipping exercise. He reassured the residents that the council is investing in the health and wellbeing of Lincolnshire’s populace.

The council’s decision has ignited a widespread debate. Many believe that halting this service could be a “false economy” considering its crucial role in reducing the strain on NHS and social services. As this critical consideration unravels, residents like Glen are optimistic that their voices will be taken into account and shape the fate of health services in the county.
