There has been a varied reaction from parents over the recent decision by the Harbour Learning Trust to finish the school day earlier on Fridays at two primary schools in North East Lincolnshire. William Barcroft Junior School in Cleethorpes and Woodlands Academy in Grimsby have altered their schedules, concluding classes at 12:45 BST on Fridays, a change intended to provide teachers with additional time for lesson preparation. While some parents welcome the increased family time, others, notably those in full-time employment, find adapting to the new schedule difficult.
The Trust, which also manages schools in Lincoln, Healing, and Great Coates, sought input from parents and carers across its network over the summer period. Even though discussions were held, only the two schools mentioned decided to adopt the early finish on Fridays, with no schools choosing to change times for starting the school day or lunch breaks. However, William Barcroft has reduced Friday lunchtimes to 45 minutes as a minor adjustment. Richard Briggs, CEO of the Trust, stressed that the revised schedule ensures that teaching is performed by fully-trained teachers and pledged a range of support and activities for pupils who are affected on Friday afternoons.
Parent Peter Grant, who resides in Cleethorpes, conveyed mixed emotions over the amendment, valuing the extra time with his children, but worried about possible implications for their education. In contrast, other parents such as Demi Bourne and Aaran Roberts highlighted the logistical difficulties brought about by the change, particularly for those juggling their jobs with childcare responsibilities.
