Operation Yellowfin Targets Illegal E-scooters in Grimsby

Humberside Police have been intensifying efforts to curb the illegal usage of e-scooters and e-bikes in Grimsby as part of a targeted campaign, Operation Yellowfin. In recent months alone, over 20 of these vehicles have been seized. Local officers, including neighbourhood beat officer Darian Hullett, are working diligently to address the rapid proliferation of these restricted vehicles in the North East Lincolnshire town. Hullett expressed the magnitude of the problem by suggesting that tackling the issue could potentially encompass his entire on-duty hours.

The initiative was in action from March to September, leading to the confiscation of a total of eight e-bikes, fifteen e-scooters, and two electric motorbikes. The principal objective of this crackdown is to bring down the number of accidents and collisions involving these types of vehicles. PC Hullett emphasised that many riders aren’t fully aware of key standards and rules. These include displaying L plates, wearing appropriate safety gear, and assuring their vehicles are suitably registered and insured. Hullett cautioned that failing to adhere to these requirements poses major danger to both riders and fellow community members.

One particularly memorable incident included the seizure of a high-powered illegal e-bike in Grimsby, which had the rider returning home by foot. The operation also covers Hull, where nine illegal e-scooters were seized. Current laws declare the use of privately-owned e-scooters on public roads unlawful, with only government-approved rental vehicles permissible in specific trial areas. Additionally, the power of e-bike motors is required not to surpass 250 watts or speeds over 15.5mph (25km/h).
