Life-size Lancaster Bomber Sculpture Takes Flight in Lincolnshire

A spectacular full-scale replica of a Lancaster bomber has been unveiled close to the A46 in Norton Disney, Lincolnshire, in tribute to the RAF crews of the Second World War. Named ‘On Freedom’s Wings’, the impressive steel structure was hoisted into place by two cranes, while around 40 volunteers secured the sculpture with nuts and bolts. The project’s fruition comes after nearly eight years of planning and work, according to Charlie White, the chair of the Bomber County Gateway Trust.

Due to its historical military airfields, Lincolnshire been called ‘bomber county’. The crucial landmark will now be visible each day to an anticipated 35,000 motorists travelling between Newark and Lincoln. The new sculpture, celebrating 100 years of the RAF, appears as though in flight, approaching the former RAF Swinderby station nearby.

Though it wasn’t specifically created as a memorial, Mr White recognises that the sculpture will resonate with those remembering RAF servicemen and women from both World Wars. The unveiling was attended by the community, including contributors like Mike Lloyd from Collingham and Tracy Folland, whose son was part of the building team.

The final details, including landscaping and the installation of CCTV, are in progress before the site opens to the public. Visitors will then have the opportunity to sit under the imitation bomber and reflect on Lincolnshire’s prosperous aviation history.
