Rain Gardens Project Underway in Immingham to Tackle Flooding

A new strategy has been unveiled to handle surface water and mitigate flooding in Immingham. North East Lincolnshire Council has initiated a six-month building initiative to create rain gardens. Replacing grassy verges with flower beds and drainage channels is central to this project, which is taking place on Washdyke Lane and Woodlands Avenue. With the financial backing from Defra’s £200 million Flood and Coastal Innovation Programmes, the rain gardens will serve to naturally handle the overflow of rainwater, diminishing flood vulnerability in the community. Andy Smith, the individual responsible for overseeing the drainage and coastal defence at the council, pointed out the numerous advantages of this eco-friendly strategy, including its low upkeep and its ability to accommodate wildlife. There will be some traffic management strategies put in place – such as a three-way stop – during the progress of the work, though it is not expected that full road closures will be necessary.
