The renowned Avro Lancaster PA474, based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, will be out of action for maintenance, consequently missing the 2025 air show season. This Lancaster, part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), holds the accolade of being the oldest airworthy model of its kind in the world. Squadron Leader Paul ‘Ernie’ Wise, the Lancaster’s pilot, stressed the crucial role of regular maintenance in ensuring the longevity of the bomber and preserving a piece of national heritage. The BBMF, inclusive of Spitfires, Hurricanes, and the less commonly recognised Dakota transport aircraft, commemorates the RAF’s illustrious history and crucially contributes to national occasions. Although the Lancaster will be absent, the flight’s various other aircraft intend to keep gracing the skies, thereby honouring the legacy and memories of those who dedicated their service to Bomber Command.
