A third pig farm in North Lincolnshire, run by Hull-based food company Cranswick, is being scrutinised following grave allegations of animal abuse. The Animal Justice Project (AJP) has publicised video evidence supposedly featuring workers at Mere Farm in Barton upon Humber participating in illicit activities, including the particularly cruel practice often referred to as ‘piglet-thumping’. Similar accusations were levied earlier against two other Lincolnshire farms managed by Cranswick, one of the country’s leading pork manufacturers. Earlier in the year, operations at Northmoor Farm near Market Rasen were halted, and Somerby Top Farm in Barnetby was also accused of the same malpractices, leading major supermarkets such as Asda and Tesco to temporarily suspend their meat supplies. Cranswick has responded by claiming they have implemented significant measures to bolster animal welfare, including the modification of staff roles and the introduction of AI-enabled CCTV surveillance. The on-going investigations further scrutinise animal welfare standards in Lincolnshire’s agricultural sector.
