A mummy from ancient Egypt, termed Pa-Sheri and estimated to be 2,300 years old, has been brought to the University of Lincoln for preservation. Pa-Sheri, originally part of the Derby Museums collection, was taken from Egypt during the 19th century and has suffered substantial damage throughout the years. Ella Maude and Ella Monteiro, student conservators from the University of Lincoln, carried out the preservation work as part of a conservation scheme funded by the Pilgrim Trust. Their work involved fortifying the cartonnage, cleaning the delicate surfaces, and repairing the damage inflicted by earlier unwrapping attempts. This project underlines the university’s involvement in the preservation of historical artefacts and the importance of confronting historical colonial practices. Following the restoration, Pa-Sheri will be returned to Derby Museums where it will feature in a new exhibition focused on the journey and handling of Egyptian artefacts within Britain.
