The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust has announced plans for a new wetland nature reserve in Horncastle. Teaming up with the East Mercia Rivers Trust, the conservation charity aims to transform a flood-prone area south of the A158 into a reserve. The proposed reserve, which will bear the name Harrison’s Holme, is located between the River Bain and the River Waring. Major development work is expected to be carried out over the winter months, subject to the approval of planning officials.
The project is being funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Anglian Water’s Get River Positive initiative. Its main objectives are to improve water storage and to develop a variety of habitats for local wildlife. Despite being primarily off-limits to the public, there are plans to incorporate an elevated viewpoint with seating, enabling visitors to appreciate the natural surroundings.
The proposed works will involve tasks such as regrading the riverbanks, excavating ponds, and planting suitable habitats. In an effort to engage the local community, volunteers will be invited to assist in various roles. A public drop-in session is set to take place at Banovallum House in Horncastle on 16 October.
