The Mayor of Lincolnshire, Dame Andrea Jenkyns, is considering a substantial overhaul to the county’s educational funding. She discussed a proposal to redirect the £1 million currently set aside for English lessons for non-native speakers, to more general numeracy and literacy initiatives available to all residents.
Jenkyns made the proposition at a Greater Lincolnshire Combined County Authority (GLCCA) meeting. She stressed the need for a more inclusive approach to educational funding that better serves the county as a whole. “We need to upskill Lincolnshire residents who have unfortunately been overlooked,” commented Jenkyns. She argued that this shift could open up opportunities for all residents to strengthen their literacy, vocabulary and numerical abilities.
Government devolution plans mean that control of these funds will soon pass to GLCCA. This transition opens up the possibility for the creation of a new, more inclusive educational program aimed at enhancing achievement across the county.
However, Jackie Brockway, the Conservative leader of West Lindsey District Council, has requested further details on the proposal. She emphasised the importance of ensuring that the funding is managed effectively and not squandered. This ongoing discussion represents a crucial shift in educational resource allocation in Lincolnshire, reinforcing a commitment to meetup the diverse educational needs of its communities.
