Lincoln Mourns the Passing of Former MP Dick Taverne

The city of Lincoln is honouring former MP Dick Taverne, following his passing at the age of 97. Taverne held the position of Labour MP for Lincoln between 1962 and 1974, establishing himself as a significant figure in local and national politics. He became nationally known for his pro-European views and caused a stir when he left the Labour party to become a Democratic Labour candidate in the 1973 Lincoln by-election. The contribution Taverne made to Lincoln and his help in establishing the Liberal Democrats following the union of the SDP and the Liberal Party are both remembered warmly by many. The head of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Ed Davey, referred to Taverne as a ‘passionate, principled and thoughtful colleague.’ His community is now reflecting on his impact, remembering his notable intelligence and the influence he had during his era in Lincoln. Taverne’s family stated he died peacefully in London, and he leaves behind his wife Janice and daughters Suzanna and Caroline. Lincoln pays tribute to his memory and the significant impact he had on their political scene.
