The Eventus business centre in Market Deeping is one of six facilities run by Lincolnshire County Council, currently contemplating measures to cut costs. During a council committee meeting on Tuesday, Councillor Liam Kelly, the executive member for growth, underscored the necessity for these centres to be self-sufficient and meet their operational expenses.
Alongside Eventus, the other centres located in Lincoln, Holbeach, Skegness, and Gainsborough, are collectively operating at an annual deficit of £300,000. Designed with the aim of bolstering start-ups and small businesses, the centres are considering diverse strategies to curtail such financial losses. Potential strategies include bypassing middlemen for repair work and providing vacant facilities to charities.
“We have pinpointed the business centres that are not financially independent,” revealed Councillor Kelly, “Our primary objective is to support businesses without imposing additional burdens on tenants or council taxpayers.” In spite of the financial adversities, the council has no intentions to part with the centres and would rather incrementally introduce any necessary cost rises for tenants.
Anotable concern raised by the committee was the current lack of appropriate spaces for start-ups within Lincolnshire. Independent Councillor Phil Dilks showed his endorsement for council funding to foster new businesses, despite acknowledging their high failure rates.
