The historic Corporation Road Bridge in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, will remain closed until essential repair works are completed, according to a council decision. The bridge has been out of use since February 2023 due to corrosion affecting its steel parts and lift mechanism. Although the initial re-opening was planned prior to Christmas 2023, current estimates suggest completion by December the following year. This change is attributed to unforeseen delays and transition between contractors.
Taziker, the newly onboarded contractor, put forward two proposals: keep the bridge shut until works conclude, or open it with a single lane and temporary traffic lights. However, council members have expressed concerns about potential further delays and accruing extra costs. Council Leader Philip Jackson voiced his frustration at the protracted delay. Meanwhile, Councillor Stewart Swinburn has pledged to keep the residents and businesses updated on bridge repair developments.
