Plans for a rooftop terrace at Lincoln’s White Hart Hotel has been rejected once more by the City of Lincoln Council’s planning committee. The proposed terrace, with a capacity to hold 60 people, was referred to as a “glowing box” by Councillor Martin Christopher due to concerns about disruption to the peaceful nature of the area.
Despite the support from the Lincoln Business Improvement Group and the University of Lincoln, opposition sprung from heritage preservation groups who worry about the potential negative impact on the historic setting. The hotel argues that the new terrace would only add to the city’s allure and invite more investment opportunities.
Councillor Biff Bean, independent, pointed out prospective benefits for both locals and tourists. Bean stated that the terrace could provide a free viewing area, in contrast to the admission fee required to access the castle walls. However, the plan received seven votes against to its two votes in favour.
The White Hart Hotel has already lodged an appeal against the original decision, currently under examination by the Planning Inspectorate.
