The long-anticipated completion of Lincoln’s ring road is making progress, following the government’s authorisation of necessary legal orders, as confirmed by the Lincolnshire County Council. The upcoming North Hykeham relief road, a dual-carriageway, is set to link the A46 Pennells roundabout to the Lincoln Eastern Bypass, signifying a major upgrade in regional infrastructure. The Department for Transport’s consent to these orders enables the council to secure necessary land, with an associated £110 million in government funding hinging on the approval of a final business case. Sam Edwards, head of highways and infrastructure, expressed positivity, speaking of this consent as a “tremendous step” towards potentially commencing construction by late February or early March, assuming successful progress.
This scheme, expected to span three years, has to overcome typical setbacks of such a grand venture, including navigating two winter seasons. Councillor Michael Cheyne, in charge of highways, stated, “Now that we have the go-ahead from the government to proceed, the next stage is to officially appoint a contractor.” The Highways and Transport Scrutiny Committee will consult on the project in December, with an executive council vote predicted in early January. The project will reap the benefits of funding as one of 50 chosen schemes across the country, as confirmed by Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander in July, following a public inquiry into the recommended land procurement.
