Families and colleagues convened in Scunthorpe to memorialise the 11 workers tragically killed during a steel plant explosion 50 years ago. British Steel facilitated the commemorative event, which included a two-minute silence and the consecration of a new memorial, honouring those who sadly passed away in the 1975 catastrophe at the Queen Victoria blast furnace. Yvonne Spence, daughter of James Boreland who was among the victims, labelled the service as deeply touching and highlighted the gruesome effect it had on her family. The event transpired at the Brigg Road site, where wreaths were presented as a heartfelt tribute and 11 trees were planted to signify the lives lost. Helen Booth and Karen Holmes, granddaughters of James Holmes, attended to pay tribute to their grandfather and commented on the persistent community spirit amongst the steelworkers, persistence that has allowed generation after generation to work side by side.
