Scunthorpe United’s fans have started a fundraising initiative to support injured player, Jonathan Gjoshe. The 22-year-old, who was hurt in a shocking stabbing event on a London-bound train, serves as a defender for both Scunthorpe United and Bottesford Town under dual-registration rules in North Lincolnshire. Gjoshe’s injuries were serious but not life-threatening.
The campaign was kick-started by Matt Ellis, host of the popular football podcast, Iron Bru. Within 24 hours, they had already raised £3,000, significantly exceeding their initial aim of £2,000. Ellis expressed his gratitude to Scunthorpe United’s fan base and the entire football fraternity for their immediate and impressive response to the appeal. The money collected will be allocated to covering Gjoshe’s healthcare costs, transportation, and loss of income during his recuperation.
Expressions of solidarity for Gjoshe came from both Scunthorpe United’s fans and the club’s management. Andy Butler, the club’s manager, referred to the incident as a horrifying event and assured Gjoshe of the club’s full support throughout his recovery.
