Residents in sheltered accommodation in the South Kesteven region, which includes areas such as Grantham, will now be required to attain permission to retain mobility scooters because of increasing worries about fire safety. The South Kesteven District Council is establishing a registration system and has plans to ban the keeping of scooters in common areas and passageways. As part of their plans, the council strives to offer different storage options like exterior pods, or may rehouse residents if needed. Councillor Virginia Moran stresses that safety must be given priority, highlighting the potential fire risk and obstruction issues caused by incorrectly stored scooters. Peter Carter, a local resident who relies heavily on his mobility scooter, voiced his apprehension about the feasibility of accessing exterior pods during the harsh winter months. The introduction of this policy will be gradual and a reassessment will be made after one year.
