A recently unveiled mural in Grimsby pays tribute to local trawlermen who bravely undertook the role of minesweepers during the two World Wars. The mural, aptly named ‘A Tribute to Those that Swept the Seas’, adorns the side of the National Reserves club. Grimsby’s strategic location made it a pivotal hub for minesweeping operations in the Humber estuary. Scores of local fishermen volunteered for this perilous task during the times of conflict. Steve Austin, chairman of the club, conveyed his deep respect for their valour, stating: ‘I wasn’t wholly aware of this piece of history until I delved into it. The bravado of these individuals and the extreme risks they took, is astounding.’
