Scunthorpe Hosts Film Premiere Commemorating End of World War Two

Title: Scunthorpe Premieres Community Film Marking 80th Anniversary of World War Two End

A community film commemorating 80 years since the conclusion of the Second World War is premiering in Scunthorpe today. The creative endeavour involved over 170 local participants, ranging from dancers to schoolchildren, who contributed to transforming the chancery of the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre into a wartime railway station. The event forms part of the nationwide Our Freedom: Then and Now initiative, supported by government funding and hosted at 60 community venues across the country.

The film launch is scheduled to take place from 5pm to 7.30pm GMT, with a public screening projected onto the exterior of Scunthorpe Central Library from 6.30pm. An indoor viewing opportunity will also be available to the public. Besides the film, an exhibition showcasing project-related photographs, community artwork, and stories inspired by the theme of ‘our freedom’ will also be on display.

The project was applauded by Councillor Rob Waltham, the leader of North Lincolnshire Council, who emphasised the creative talents present within local communities. He stated that the collective effort of many coming together to share their abilities, recount their experiences, and produce a piece impactful for years to come was commendable.

The narrative, orchestrated by Fred Garland from Tenfoot Dance Company and filmed by Laramedia, depicts a tale of love, loss and resilience through the lens of war. Councillor John Davison, the cabinet member for community wellbeing, conveyed his respect for the level of local involvement, as he highlighted the connection the project forges between history and future.

Providing a physical insight into the film’s setting, elements of the initial set have been recreated across the ground and first floors of the library. This forms part of the wider exhibition stirred by local organisations, like the North Lincolnshire Veterans Hub and young historians. This exhibition will continue its display until the end of January next year.
