A young resident of Cleethorpe, Clara, despite grappling with a rare kidney disorder, is set to dazzle audiences on BBC One by participating in the Children in Need choir. Clara, diagnosed with Denys-Drash syndrome that led to kidney cancer and necessitated a transplant, will raise the banner for East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in the forthcoming 2025 BBC Children in Need Choir. The choir has prepared a unique rendition of Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’ to present on Friday. Sharing her excitement, Clara’s mother, Elliott, said “Clara is ecstatic. She told me, she’s going eyes-wide open for recognition and can’t wait to make an appearance on television. She’s now in continuous rehearsal mode for her performance.”
Never an easy path, Clara’s journey has been marked with complex treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and extensive dialysis, till her father volunteered to donate a kidney for her transplant. Despite an uncertain future and the possible necessity for further treatments, Clara’s enthusiasm for her forthcoming appearance remains undeterred.
Invaluable help and support was extended to the family by St Andrew’s Hospice in Grimsby, where Clara and her siblings derived benefits from Children in Need-funded programmes. Stating the significant role of this funding, Sam Page, family support practitioner at the hospice pointed out, “Without the Children in Need funding, I and many others like me would not have a job, this role would not be possible.”
Elliott conveyed profound appreciation for the extensive support provided by St Andrew’s Hospice, declaring, “The illness of a child impacts not just them, but the family as a whole. St Andrew’s Hospice has been incredibly supportive for us as a family, providing guidance and aid far beyond our expectations.”
This year, BBC Children in Need aims to back 32 projects across East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, with over 11,000 children and young people set to draw benefits. Featuring hosts such as Paddy McGuinness and Vernon Kay, the appeal show will be aired on BBC One at 19:00 GMT on Friday.
