Title: Scunthorpe Residents Express Safety Worries Over Zebra Crossing Sites
Body:
There has been an outcry by residents in Scunthorpe regarding the positioning of two zebra crossings in close proximity to a busy junction. This grievance comes in the aftermath of a recent incident involving a car and a pedestrian. These crossings, which were put in place by North Lincolnshire Council in the previous year at the roundabout connecting Ashby Road and Rowland Road, are now being considered as unsafe by locals due to their closeness to the roundabout.
A pedestrian had to be hospitalised with minor injuries after an occurrence at the Ashby Road crossing on Monday 10 November. Council leader Rob Waltham, however, defended the placement of the crossings by emphasising that their position was determined following comprehensive traffic flow investigations. He has encouraged drivers to adapt to the new traffic format by strictly adhering to speed limits.
Samir Own, a local driver has drawn attention to the potential risk of instances involving cars running into each other from behind at the crossings. John Andrews, a pedestrian, dubbed the crossings as somewhat intimidating because of the high-speed vehicles. Gary Spacey, a resident living nearby, agreed on the necessity of the zebra crossings on such a busy road, primarily as there are two schools nearby, but suggested that moving them further away from the roundabout could enhance safety.
The council has staunchly maintained that the crossings, which comprise cycle paths, were intended to amplify pedestrian safety at what is considered one of Scunthorpe’s busiest junctions. This story was adapted by The Lincoln Post, originally reported at www.bbc.com.
