Title: Lincoln Nightlife Grapples with Escalating Costs: A Call for More Government Support
John O’Donohue, owner of several nightclubs and bars in Lincoln, has called for greater governmental support as the hospitality industry contends with rising expenses. O’Donohue, who operates Carousel, Home, and Craft, revealed that the annual energy bill for one of his establishments has quadrupled within five years, increasing from £40,000 to £160,000. He divulged, “You just don’t get profits. One has to persevere through this turbulent period.” The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) states that around 800 night-time venues have closed nationwide over the past half-decade.
Acknowledging the night-time economy’s role, the government has proposed steps such as lowering licensing fees and reducing the alcohol duty on draught beer.
In his business tenure of 15 years, O’Donohue conceded it has “never been more difficult.” He pointed out that while there is a “will among people to go out,” they need more dispensable income. “The complications extend beyond my doorstep,” he stated. “If the government can cultivate an environment with lower interest rates, mortgage, food, and energy prices, the public would have additional money for high street spending.”
The NTIA emphasised that from March 2020, the late-night sector shrank by over 26%, resulting in a loss of more than 89,000 jobs by October 2024. The sector undergoes significant taxation, as pointed out by Michael Kill, NTIA Chief Executive. UK Hospitality has been campaigning for cut-downs on business rates, National Insurance and VAT levels.
Lincoln locals, for instance, Mia Ross and Molly Swinscoe, have shared that they still relish their nights out but find the costs of drinks and transport off-putting. “The costs of beverages, entrance fees, it’s overwhelming,” Swinscoe voiced her concerns. While Mae West observed a decrease in participation in the nightlife, favouring more serene evenings, Ben Huddlestone stated that the high prices of drinks notably limit his social outings.
Reiterating the significance of the night-time economy to local communities, a government spokesperson indicated the various financial aids rolled out to support nightlife venues.
