Scunthorpe Steelworks Partners with Charity to Tackle Addiction Stigma

A significant project aimed at addressing the stigmas associated with addiction is being backed by British Steel, one of the major employers in Lincolnshire. The initiative includes a partnership with WithYou, a charity that deals with drug and alcohol-related concerns, which has started conducting training sessions for the employees at the Scunthorpe steel plant. Sophie Knight, the community engagement coordinator at the local WithYou centre, emphasised the crucial necessity of open dialogues regarding addiction to ensure prompt support and intervention.

WithYou offers a confidential, impartial service for individuals dealing with issues related to drugs, alcohol, or mental health. The training provided at British Steel underscores the need for early intervention in the workplace and seeks to guide those in need towards the support resources available.

Ms. Knight applauded British Steel’s vital role in the Scunthorpe community, stating that nearly everyone in the neighbourhood knows someone employed at the plant. She aspires that the initiative will help overcome the stigma related to substance use and addiction, highlighting that these can affect any individual, regardless of their background. The training is conducted in conjunction with Scunthorpe Recovery Service, incorporating input from people who’ve experienced addiction personally.

Expressing gratitude for the combined effort, Martin Welch, the occupational health manager at British Steel, acknowledged the benefits of working closely with local nurses and mental health support workers. Their growing knowledge and improved ability will help them better assist their colleagues who are battling addiction.
