Residents of Horncastle’s Tanglewood Care Home have successfully knitted a noteworthy 200-metre long scarf, ample enough to envelop their entire care home building. The initiative sparked when a resident showed interest in learning to knit during the balmy summer nights; unable to sleep. The task was led by Caroline Hughes, the activities coordinator at the care home, which shifted from knitting blankets and pom poms to crafting a mammoth scarf. This creative endeavour, accomplished within November, involved not just the residents but the broader local community, united in supporting Dementia UK.
Caroline Hughes, 61, shared her joy at the community’s fervent involvement, stating, “We’ve been genuinely delighted with the significant participation – the community has genuinely coalesced.” She recognised the challenge, however, noted the daily influx of knitting contributions rendering the completion of the scarf a shared accomplishment.
Among the participants was Elise Jempson, a 93-year-old resident who developed a passion for knitting when she was a teenager. Although slightly bemused by the concept of wrapping a building in knitwork, she was delighted to contribute, nostalgically recalling her days of knitting for the troops in her youthful years.
The project not only united the residents with their community but brought to the fore the warmth and creativity ingrained in Horncastle town, reflecting the town’s robust community spirit.
