Burghley House: Lincolnshire’s Doorway to Gothic Cinema

Title: Burghley House: Lincolnshire’s Gateway to Gothic Cinema

The striking Elizabethan manor, Burghley House, situated on the boundary of Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire, has once again been chosen as a film location. This time the mansion features in a fresh Netflix interpretation of Mary Shelley’s seminal work, Frankenstein. The movie, expertly directed by Guillermo Del Toro, boasts a star-studded cast, including Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, with meticulous setpiece scenes taking place within the mansion’s lavishly decorated rooms.

Philip Gompertz, in charge of commercial visitor operations at Burghley, enthusiastically discussed the mansion’s role in the movie. He specifically mentioned the transformation of the Bow Room into an atmospheric gothic set, even featuring a specially created four-poster bed for key scenes. “The unique atmosphere here flawlessly matched the film’s supernatural and mysterious requirements,” Gompertz observed. He alluded to how the mansion’s Elizabethan and Tudor design contributed an unexpected yet ultimately fit gothic ambiance.

The arrival of film crews transformed Burghley House, filling the estate with cranes and equipment. Despite the potential disruptions, Gompertz emphasised the dual advantages these projects bring: economic assistance for the mansion’s maintenance and a boost in the number of visitors drawn by film tourism. “Seeing Burghley shine on screen fills us with pride,” he declared, confident that the film would lure new audiences to the area.

Involvement in prominent productions not only adds to Burghley House’s charm but also gives recognition to Lincolnshire as a film-lover’s retreat, thereby promising both economic and cultural gains for the community.
