A heartrending incident occurred at Golden Beach Holiday Park in Ingoldmells, near Skegness, when a severe caravan fire tragically ended the lives of Esme Baker, aged 10, and her father, Lee Baker, 48 years old, from Retford. An inquest into this tragic event concluded that the fire could potentially have originated from a carelessly discarded cigarette or an electronic device, however, the precise cause remains uncertain. The inseparable pair, known for their deep bond, regrettably died from smoke inhalation on 5 April.

A thorough investigation by Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue demonstrated significant destruction caused by the intense fire, impeding the identification of the exact cause. The caravan, which Mr Baker had purchased in November 2024, was swallowed by the flames after the father and daughter returned from an evening spent at The Sandancer pub. Eyewitness reports detailed hearing ‘loud popping’ sounds and a ‘cracking noise’ around 03:30 GMT before the fire was notified.

Details disclosed during the inquest at Lincoln Coroner’s Court included a statement from Simon Cartwright, the station manager at Skegness. He noted that Mr Baker’s cigarette was missed following the Brobdingnagian fire, inciting speculation regarding its contribution to the fire. In the main bedroom, remnants of a battery-powered device were discovered. Additionally, a tablet paired with a charging cable was found in another room, though any possible connection to the fire remains indiscernible.

Detective Inspector Kara Nicholson of Lincolnshire Police confirmed the absence of third-party involvement and officially ruled the incident as accidental. Heartfelt tributes portrayed Mr Baker as a ‘kind, generous, and hard-working individual’ stating his strong bond with his daughter. The tragic demise of this father and daughter has left an unfillable void in their community, drawing heightened attention to the significance of fire safety awareness.

This tragic event underlines the potential dangers implicit in everyday situations and the poignant necessity for caution, especially in holiday accommodation settings.
