A lamp-post inappropriately situated at the centre of a pavement in Market Rasen is to be moved following complaints from local inhabitants. The streetlight was temporarily taken out in January to assist Northern Powergrid’s mending of a defective electricity cable, and was reinstalled in October on Gordon Field but in a different, problematic location. The Lincolnshire County Council clarified that the cable was shifted towards the rear of the footpath, limiting locations available for repositioning the lamp. Plans are underway to amend this matter, with expectation to reach a solution by the end of January.
Andrew Riesner, a local who relies on a wheelchair, commented on the issues caused by the angled pavement with a lowered curb, stating that it destabilises his wheelchair. Another inhabitant, John Patterson, underlined the lamp-post’s inefficiency, pointing out that due to the lights being switched off at midnight, it becomes unnoticeable to individuals traversing the area during dark hours. The fact that there are houses of ageing citizens situated nearby adds to the concern.
Jessie Mawer shared her confusion, asking why the lamp-post could not have been situated two feet from its initial location. Echoing her feelings, her friend Shirley Ward emphasised the risk it brings to wheelchair and pushchair users who are forced into the street.
Through a clarification, Northern Powergrid stated that their remedial work relates to an 11,000-volt cable, requiring an excavation for secure access and repairs. The council gave assurance that they are contemplating options to shift the streetlight to a more convenient spot and, meanwhile, have plans to convert it into an all-night glowing light pending relocation, upon receiving Northern Powergrid’s agreement.
