Belton Estate to Host Ancient Games and Activities for Children This Summer

Belton Estate to Host Ancient Games and Activities for Children This Summer

Belton Estate, located close to Grantham in Lincolnshire, is gearing up for a summer filled with ancient-themed activities aimed at children. The Big Dig archaeology event will be running between 19 July and 3 September, allowing youngsters to step into the shoes of archaeologists. They’ll be able to examine sand pits for fossils, convert their teddy bears into depictions of Ancient Egyptians, and engage in deciphering hieroglyphic codes. Lydia Wardingham, the senior programming and partnerships officer at Belton, has mentioned that inspiration for these activities comes from the estate’s previous proprietors, the Brownlow family, who had a special interest in travel and ancient artefacts.

Wardingham stated, “We’ve had visitor comments expressing an interest to see the estate’s history reflected in our programming. In response, we made sure that our Big Dig activities tie in with the Brownlow legacy.” Over the duration of the summer, a multitude of crafting sessions will be made available. These include painting rock scarab beetles, constructing Roman helmets, creating mosaics and coins, fashioning Egyptian figures, wrapping tin foil mummies, and experimenting with cave finger painting techniques.

Beyond these creative undertakings, large renditions of popular board games like Connect Four will be on offer, as well as family yoga sessions led by instructor Julie Robinson, and bushcraft workshops scheduled for the latter half of July and August. The estate grounds will be open to exploration to further inform visitors about the rich history of the Brownlow family. The schedule is complemented by outdoor film screenings, contributing to a packed line-up of summertime amusement.
