Brave Locals Take the Plunge in Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes for New Year’s Charity Swim

Dozens of courageous locals greeted the New Year by immersing themselves in the frosty North Sea off the Lincolnshire towns of Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes. This traditional New Year’s Day charity swim saw participants dressed up in fancy fancy outfits before plunging into the freezing cold sea, all in the name of various local charities. Safety was a priority with the swimmers in Mablethorpe receiving a comprehensive safety briefing prior to their rejuvenating dip.

The story, unfortunately, was different in East Yorkshire where the annual sea swim in Hornsea had to be cancelled due to the danger of high waves. The local fire service stepped up to provide a different kind of seaside splash by deploying their hoses. It is the second year in a row that the Hornsea event has had to be cancelled; the previous year’s cancellation was due to sewage overflow problems. Despite these setbacks, the spirit of community and charity remained undimmed on the Lincolnshire coast.

This narrative was adapted and reworked from the original report available on www.bbc.com for The Lincoln Post’s readership.
