The revered Lightning XR724, a Cold War fighter jet deeply ingrained in Lincolnshire’s history, has been triumphantly resurrected at its former base, RAF Binbrook. This extraordinary aircraft has undergone a painstaking five-year restoration, resulting in it being fired up for the first time in almost two decades. The Lightning, specifically designed to counteract Soviet bombers, occupies a unique spot in local lore, having made its maiden flight on 10 February 1965. Despite its retirement in 1991, the plane has been carefully reintegrated at the location near Market Rasen. Chief engineer Chris Johnson, given the privilege of igniting the 60-year-old jet, couldn’t contain his anticipation, proclaiming, ‘Reviving this grand dame after its prolonged inactivity is a magnificent feeling.’ The successful completion of this project is a tangible illustration of the commitment and enthusiasm of those safeguarding Lincolnshire’s abundant aviation history.
