Horncastle murder charge case moves to Lincoln Crown Court after first hearing

Horncastle murder charge case moves to Lincoln Crown Court after first hearing

A murder case connected to the death of a young woman in Horncastle is now set to move to Lincoln Crown Court, following an initial appearance before magistrates in the city. Police were called to a property on Warwickshires Way at about 4.20pm on 2 April. When officers arrived, they found 27-year-old Khyali Jana Rahim Bad Shah unconscious inside the address. Despite the emergency response, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident has cast a long shadow over Horncastle, a market town better known for its independent shops, established neighbourhoods and close knit community than for major crime investigations. In the days since officers first attended the property, the street has become the focus of police activity and public concern, with many residents following developments closely. Mohammad Raees Mohammad Rahim, 34, of Warwickshires Way, has been charged with murder. The charge was considered at a preliminary hearing at Lincoln Magistrates' Court on Monday, where the case was sent on to Lincoln Crown Court because of the seriousness of the allegation.

When the matter came before the crown court on Wednesday morning, Rahim was not produced from custody. The hearing still went ahead for administrative purposes before Judge Simon Hirst, who dealt with the next procedural steps in the case. There was no application for bail. Judge Hirst adjourned proceedings until 15 May, when a plea and trial preparation hearing is due to take place at Lincoln Crown Court.

A provisional trial date has also been set for 5 October. Until the next hearing, Rahim remains remanded in custody. For people across Lincolnshire, the case is now entering the formal court process that can often unfold over several months. At this early stage, only limited details have been aired in open court, and the next hearing is expected to clarify how the case will proceed ahead of the trial date later in the year.

The death of Ms Bad Shah has left a sombre mark on the community and placed a serious case before the county's courts. What began with an emergency call to a home in Horncastle has now shifted into the legal arena in Lincoln, where future hearings will determine the next steps. As with all criminal proceedings, the charge is an allegation and has not been proven in court. Reporting restrictions and the early stage of the case mean only basic facts have been made public so far.

The Lincoln Post has not independently verified the claims outlined in court. Further updates are expected after the hearing in May, when plea and trial preparation matters are due to be addressed before the case returns to court again ahead of the October trial listing.
