Lincolnshire Prison Worker Jailed for Inappropriate Relationship with Inmate

A staff member of HMP Morton Hall, a Category C male prison near Lincoln, has received a 12-month prison sentence for professional misconduct. Nikki Croft, 51, confessed to conducting an improper relationship with an inmate, only identified as LZ, and supplying 11 illegal SIM cards. The offences became public knowledge during a hearing at Lincoln Crown Court, in which Croft faced two counts of misconduct in a public office.
Croft was employed as a civilian inclusion support coordinator at the prison, starting her role in 2022. She confessed to initiating a relationship with LZ between December 2022 and January 2023. Notwithstanding a suspension and an investigation sparked by circulating rumours, she resumed her role in April 2023 after the inquiry’s initial findings were indecisive. Nevertheless, more suspicions were raised when ongoing communication between Croft and LZ was discovered, unearthing photographs and a SIM card frequently utilised by prisoners.
In the courtroom, it was debated that Croft had developed an unhealthy obsession with the prisoner, driven by her emotional vulnerability after past relationships. Whilst imposing the sentence, Recorder Luke Blackburn underscored the dangers of Croft’s actions, underlining her likelihood to become a victim of coercion and bribery, despite her professional training.
