Lincolnshire’s Green Heroes: How Local Groups are Transforming Our Urban Spaces

Lincolnshire’s community spirit is alive and thriving, largely due to the dedicated local groups that are diligently transforming urban spaces into verdant retreats. Among them is the Dawber Garden in uphill Lincoln, a garden formerly attached to the Lincoln Lunatic Asylum and now a beloved public space. The Dawber Garden Community Trust, a voluntary organisation, took over the management of the garden from the City of Lincoln Council in 2023, ensuring its continued tranquillity for both residents and visitors. Lynn Ritson, the Chair of Trustees, explains the impact: “Every single day, people approach us, engage in conversation, ask us questions, and express gratitude for our efforts in the garden. It delights everyone to have such a welcoming space in the city centre.”

In another uplifting example, Grantham RiverCare has collected about 30 tonnes of waste in the past 21 years, powerfully demonstrating the efficacy of community efforts in protecting and preserving our natural landscapes. Activities like these do more than just enhance the physical appearance of our towns – they also cultivate a strong sense of community and pride among its residents.

With their continued growth and success, these groups are reaching out to the younger generations, offering them fitness opportunities coupled with community service. “Why not swap a gym session for a Sunday morning hour of community service?” is a suggestion from one volunteer leader, urging locals to directly participate in the creation of a greener Lincolnshire.
