Lincolnshire’s Pull Still Strong – From Fenland ‘Peace’ to Axholme’s Identity Split, Locals Speak Out
Local News

A new YouGov poll shared online has sparked a heartfelt debate about what it really means to feel “connected” to Lincolnshire — and the answers from residents and ex-pats show the county’s grip can be as powerful as the big Fenland sky.
One former Boston local, who moved to London at 18 and says it was “some (ahem) 20 years ago”, told fellow Lincolnshire residents they still feel a strong bond with South Lincolnshire.
With family still living in the area and regular trips back, the commenter said Lincolnshire remains “home; where I’m meant to be”. They described a familiar moment many will recognise: driving over the bridge on the A16 out of Peterborough and watching the fens open up.
“Seeing the Lincolnshire fens and the massive sky is still one of my favourite feelings,” they wrote. “I suddenly feel at peace.”
And it’s not just the scenery they miss. The Boston ex-pat revealed they regularly get classic Lincolnshire fare delivered to the capital — including sausages, haslet and plum bread.
“My little Londoner kids will smash through a plum bread in a couple of days. They’re absolutely addicted to it,” they said.
But the dream of moving back may be slipping away. The commenter said it had “always” been their intention to return to Boston once they’d made their fortune — but added: “My wife won’t have it. I feel sad that I may never again live on the Lincolnshire fens.”
Elsewhere in the discussion, a resident from the Isle of Axholme in North Lincolnshire said their area doesn’t always feel tied to the rest of the county — and suggested the local identity can drift northwards.
“I think I see more Yorkshire flags than Lincolnshire ones,” they wrote, adding that the area still has signs of older administrative links, including references to “Humberside police etc”.
Another commenter said they felt strongly connected to Lincolnshire — but admitted that researching the county made them question how much it changes from end to end.
They pointed to the striking contrasts across the region: from the flat fens that many outsiders picture first, to the rolling Wolds; from the coastal stretch “from Skeg up to the Humberston ‘fitties’”, to the Carrs of North Lincolnshire; and even the Stamford area, where some villages were said to look surprisingly “Cotswolds”.
The commenter asked whether any other UK county can match Lincolnshire for such a “disparate range of landscapes and vibes”.
The YouGov figures that prompted the conversation were shared in the Lincolnshire community on Reddit, where the thread quickly turned into a snapshot of county pride, shifting borders, and the powerful pull of home — whether you’re still here, or looking back from miles away.
