Local Link to the Gunpowder Plot: Twigmoor Hall’s Historic Role

Title: Twigmoor Hall’s Historic Link to the Gunpowder Plot

As Bonfire Night approaches, it is interesting to note that the famous Gunpowder Plot of 1605 has significant links to the region of Lincolnshire. Tony Beacock, a local resident near Hull, has a personal connection to this infamous event in British history. Through extensive family tree research, Beacock has discovered that he is related to John and Christopher Wright, two central figures in the plot, known to him as his 12th great uncles.

Originally from Twigmoor Hall, located near Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire, the Wright brothers were among the early recruits in the conspiracy led by Robert Catesby. Twigmoor Hall, known for its Catholic associations, is reputed to have been the initial meeting point for the conspirators. This includes the notorious Guy Fawkes, who was a close acquaintance of the Wright brothers.

Dr Ewan Roger from the National Archives suggests that the initial discussions of the plot may have taken place at Twigmoor Hall. This historically rich and intriguing site, with tales of hidden tunnels and priest holes, lends an air of mystery to the unfolding story.

As the local community prepares for the excitement of fireworks and celebrations, the dramatic historical event plays out its surprise connection to the Lincolnshire countryside. This connection serves to add an extra dimension to the evening’s commemorations.
