Addressing this issue, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said drivers have endured substandard road conditions for an extended period, resulting in expensive vehicle repairs. To tackle this, the government promises to invest £7.3 billion over the forthcoming four years to mend the roads. North Lincolnshire, along with other councils categorised ‘red’, will receive additional support. This package includes £300,000 specially allocated for expert planning and capacity assistance.

Alexander asserted that the public deserves clarity on the use of funds allocated for road maintenance, leading to the introduction of the mapping tool and traffic light rating system. The scheme’s introduction seeks to promote more efficient use of taxpayers’ money for road repair and maintenance to prevent pothole formation.

Local motorists have voiced their dissatisfaction with the recurring pothole issue, which often incurs unwarranted visits to the garage. The new system enables North Lincolnshire residents to monitor council success in road repairs, ensuring local authorities are held accountable for the required improvements.
