Probe launched after suspected illegal waste dumping discovered near Ancaster

Household and construction waste was found dumped, burnt and buried on land near Grantham.

An investigation is under way in South Kesteven after council officers and police uncovered what is suspected to be an illegal waste site on land off Water Lane in Ancaster, near Grantham. South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) said household and construction waste had been dumped, burned and buried on the agricultural land, which does not have a permit to store or transfer waste. The site, which is fenced and secured by a gate, came to the council’s attention after nearby residents reported regular bonfires that they said were causing distress. Following a search on Friday, SKDC and Lincolnshire Police found items including fridge-freezers, car parts, tyres, scrap metal and window frames. The council also said buried waste was discovered, including material suspected to be asbestos. Two people have been questioned by Lincolnshire Police on suspicion of fly-tipping and other offences, SKDC added. Councillor Rhys Baker said large quantities of waste being dumped, burned or buried could create serious environmental and health risks, through pollution in the ground and watercourses or particles released into the air. He urged anyone in the area who suspects illegal activity to report it to the council.
