RSPCA Issues Warning After Pony Abandoned in North Lincolnshire

A pony was found in a tragically poor condition on a public footpath in Owston Ferry, North Lincolnshire, which led to a caution issued by the RSPCA about the escalating trend of animal abandonment. This charity has indicated that such occurrences are projected to reach a level not seen in six years, and anticipate an additional increase this winter. The pony, which has been named Niko by the RSPCA, was found trapped between two gates severely malnourished and covered in a dirty, tangled coat.

Olivia Farrar, an animal rescue officer, implored pet owners who find the cost of care too burdensome to look for assistance, rather than discarding their animals. Moreover, under the principles of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, those found guilty of abandoning animals may face prison terms or fines.

This year, the RSPCA has already received 24,270 reports concerning abandoned animals, a significant increase over the 19,727 cases reported during the same period last year. The charity fears the situation may deteriorate further as the temperature begins to fall. They are encouraging anyone with any information about Niko’s abandonment to get in touch with the RSPCA.
