Thatcher Fest to Commemorate Margaret Thatcher’s Legacy in Grantham

Shows will be held at Grantham Guildhall Arts Centre as well as other events across the town.

Thatcher Fest to Commemorate Margaret Thatcher’s Legacy in Grantham

Grantham, the birth town of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, is slated to organise ‘Thatcher Fest’ on the centenary anniversary of her birth. The celebration, starting on 13 October, will consist of a variety of events remembering and discussing the controversial legacy of the political leader. The primary attractions include a drag show performance, speeches by one-time minister Edwina Currie, and television celebrity Gyles Brandreth.

South Kesteven District Council aspires to create political engagement within the local community and invigorate local pedestrian numbers through the festival. Council Head, Ashley Baxter, has underscored the necessity of acknowledging Thatcher’s significant achievement in becoming the UK’s first woman prime minister, despite the contention evoked by her policies.

At the Guildhall Arts Centre, a line-up of events such as ‘Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho’ – a drag show featuring Matt Tedford; an interlocution with Edwina Currie; and ‘Quite A Centenary’ – a show anchored by Gyles Brandreth, are scheduled. Furthermore, guided tours illustrating ‘The Thatcher Years’, film exhibits of ‘The Iron Lady’, and displays from Grantham Dramatic Society will take place.

Additional plans include an exhibition consisting of Thatcher postcards at the Union Street Gallery and a showcase at Grantham Library displaying her formative years and influence. These initiatives aim to portray Thatcher’s extensive influence on a local and global level.
