“Angela” scheme born in Lincolnshire now saving lives around the world
A venue safety scheme known as “Ask for Angela” is being promoted in Lincolnshire as a way for people to discreetly seek help on a night out. The idea is that anyone who feels unsafe, is being harassed, followed, pressured, or simply needs assistance can approach staff and ask for “Angela”. Staff who are aware of the scheme can then help by moving the person to a safer area, calling security, arranging transport home, or contacting police when appropriate. While the scheme has been widely discussed online and is used in a number of venues, this article does not verify where or when it first began. What is clear is that the code phrase is intended to provide a low-key way to ask for support without escalating a situation. People planning a night out in Lincolnshire are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the scheme and, if they feel at risk, to speak to venue staff straight away. In an emergency, call 999.
