Boston man due in Lincoln court over A17 crash that killed toddler near Sleaford

A Boston man is due to appear at Lincoln Magistrates' Court later this month in connection with a crash on the A17 near Sleaford in which a toddler died. Lincolnshire Police said Hristo Iliev, 32, of Hide Close, Boston, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He is scheduled to appear in court on 23 April. The case relates to a three-vehicle collision on the A17 near Holdingham roundabout at about 4.45pm on 19 March last year. Police said a 20-month-old boy was airlifted to hospital after the crash and died two days later. Officers also said the driver of one of the other vehicles suffered serious injuries. The charges concern the fatal collision near one of the main junctions on the A17, a major route through Lincolnshire linking parts of the county including Boston, Sleaford and Lincoln. At this stage, the charges are allegations and the case remains before the courts. The Lincoln Post has not independently verified these claims. A first appearance is listed at Lincoln Magistrates' Court on 23 April. Court proceedings are expected to address the charges and any next steps in the case. Under UK reporting restrictions and press standards, care should be taken in identifying children involved in criminal cases. For that reason, this report does not name the child who died. Lincolnshire Police said the defendant is from Boston and that the charges relate to the collision near Holdingham roundabout. The force also said one other driver was seriously injured in the incident. The A17 is one of Lincolnshire's principal roads and the collision happened on a section used by traffic travelling between towns across the county. The case therefore has clear local relevance for readers in Boston, Sleaford, Lincoln and surrounding areas. No plea has been reported in relation to the charges in this case. Any matters of guilt or innocence will be determined by the court. The hearing on 23 April is expected to be the next public stage in the proceedings. Further details may emerge in court about the allegations, the timetable for the case and whether it will remain before magistrates or be sent to the Crown Court. This report is limited to the charges as stated by police and the date of the scheduled court appearance. It does not seek to go beyond the information currently in the public domain.
