Lincoln Zoo Welcomes UK’s Only Female Indian Sloth Bear

Title: Lincoln Zoo Welcomes UK’s First Female Indian Sloth Bear in Forty Years

Lincoln Zoo, located in Newball, Lincolnshire, is now the home of Zara, the nation’s very first female Indian sloth bear in over forty years. Following 18 months of careful planning, Zara was transported from Singapore Zoo. Now, she is set to share the space with Randhir, a male sloth bear that already resides at the zoo. This comes as part of the European Endangered Species Programme.

Neil Mumby, the Zoo director, was notably excited by Zara’s arrival. He spoke about the uniqueness of female Indian sloth bears in Britain, which made this event all the more significant. These bears, native to India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, are immediately recognisable due to their long claws and perceived aggressive behaviour. They are also categorised as vulnerable since their global population is less than 20,000.

Following a 16-hour-long journey, involving multiple flights, Zara has acclimatised to her new heated enclosure at Lincoln Zoo. This year, the arrival of Zara and Randhir, who was earlier transported from Germany, is viewed as a crucial contribution in the efforts to create a new, genetically diverse bloodline from Asia.

The local community played a significant role in facilitating Zara’s transfer, including the assistance of Gainsborough MP, Sir Edward Leigh. His support was crucial in updating the health certification requirements and making Zara’s move possible.
