Man dies after crash involving livestock lorry on Lincoln bypass

Local News

A man has died following a serious crash on the A46 Lincoln bypass, in an incident that caused major disruption on one of the city’s busiest routes. Lincolnshire Police said the collision happened at Skellingthorpe roundabout shortly after 10:00 GMT on Thursday. The crash involved two cars, described as a grey Honda Jazz and a white Ford Mondeo, along with a Volvo HGV carrying cows. The lorry overturned in the collision.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said his family has been informed. For many drivers across Lincoln and nearby villages, the A46 is a key route around the city, linking residential areas, commuter traffic and freight moving through the county. The closure of the bypass between the Doddington Road and Carholme Road roundabouts, along with the shutdown of Skellingthorpe Road on both sides of the A46, is likely to have had a significant effect on journeys throughout the day.

Emergency services remained at the scene for hours as investigators began the work of establishing exactly what happened. Lincolnshire Police said a full examination of the site was needed so that evidence could be secured and preserved. As well as the fatal collision itself, the presence of livestock added further complexity to the response. Police said the HGV had been transporting a number of cows and that specialists were dealing with the animals following the overturn.

Sgt Adam Doona, from the serious collision investigation unit, described the incident as tragic and offered condolences to the family and friends of the man who died. The crash is another stark reminder of the consequences of serious incidents on Lincolnshire’s road network, particularly on heavily used junctions around Lincoln where local traffic and larger commercial vehicles often meet. Skellingthorpe roundabout is a familiar point for motorists travelling between the city, Skellingthorpe and other surrounding communities, and any major incident there can quickly have knock-on effects across west Lincoln. Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward as inquiries continue.

Anyone who saw the collision, or who may have relevant information, is being asked to contact Lincolnshire Police. At this stage, no further details about the man who died have been released publicly. The investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains ongoing. For Lincolnshire residents, the incident has brought sadness as well as disruption, with a major local road turned into the scene of a lengthy emergency response and a family now facing the aftermath of a fatal collision.
