The Mischievous Tale of Lincoln’s Lesser-Known Imp

Title: The Lesser-Known Partner in Mischief from Lincoln’s Folklore

Original Content:

The county of Lincolnshire, steeped in myth and legend, takes pride in the famous fable of the Lincoln Imp, a mischievous elf who ended up as a rock formation within the realms of Lincoln Cathedral. Yet, as divulged by local historian, Emma Lingard, another figure lurking in the shadows of this yarn – the imp’s lesser-known accomplice – bears an equally intriguing narrative.

According to the lore, this subsequent imp, perhaps a sibling of the Lincoln Imp, managed to escape divine retribution in Lincoln and took shelter in Grimsby Minster. Unfortunately, his delight in the aftermath of a fiery catastrophe at the tower eventually led to his downfall. He, too, was transformed into stone and, in his perpetual form, upholds the building forever.

Although the Lincoln Imp’s infamy might cast a shadow over his partner in crime, Ms Lingard notes that the narrative surrounding this Grimsby Imp — an intricate, complex tale of trickery and comeuppance — is an enthralling aspect of Lincolnshire’s folklore, serving as a tribute to historical usage of statues and stained glass in perpetuating stories.

This story was developed by The Lincoln Post, drawing from the original reporting at www.bbc.com.
